This week after quite a hiatus I am back to working on my husbands family lines. Lewis (Louis) P. Good (Goode) was my husbands paternal 4X great grandfather, His daughter Josephine married Joseph Kornmeyer. Lewis was born in France in 1815. Doing the math from his gravestone I place his birth on May 15 1815. From family stories Lewis was born in France near the Germany French border in a town called Rahafa (?).
There is an area known as the Imperial Territory of Alsace-Lorraine which has changed hands throughout history. After the Franco-Prussian wars it became part of Germany. A large portion of the Alsace population spoke German and kept the German traditions where as the larger population of the Lorraine area were French speaking. France long maintained that its border with Germany should be maintained by the Rhine River but Kaiser Wilhelm and his advisors wanted the western expansion from the Rhine that had been developed during the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace-Lorraine

So when Lewis Good immigrated from this area, prior to 1850 (exact date unknown at this time), he was coming from France. When his children were asked after the 1870 US Census where their father was born it may be listed either as France, Germany or Fr. Germany.

Lewis Good married Mary Elizabeth Richards sometime around 1834. Mary or Elizabeth is shown as also being born in France on any census where she herself is enumerated.  Their first of 9 children Mary Good was born  about 1835 in Oneida  county New York State followed by Louisa in 1837, Lewis N. 1839, John 1841, Charles 1843, Peter R. 1845, Josephine 1848, Catherine 1851, and Frank in 1855.

Lewis Good lived continuously in the Boonville area of Oneida County New York from 1835 until his death in 1860

In the 1860 US Non population Census taken in June just 2 months before his death we find this listing. (Click on images to enlarge.)
